Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is prescription estrogen, progesterone or testosterone used to treat symptoms of menopause or medically diagnosed low testosterone.
Timing matters more in an older city
Scottsdale's 65-plus share is 26.4%, more than double Phoenix's 12.2% [1]. Natural menopause arrives at an average age of 52 [6]. The Menopause Society says hormone therapy benefits outweigh risks for most healthy women with symptoms who are under 60 or within 10 years of menopause [7], and FDA's 2025 labeling update uses the same window [2]. Outside that window, the decision is more individual. FDA's 2026 label updates treated systemic products and vaginal estrogen as separate categories, so ask which kind you are being offered [8].

Medicare and HRT
For a city where so many residents are on Medicare, note that Part D plans can cover hormone prescriptions, with cost set by the plan's formulary tier; Original Medicare covers visits but generally not the drugs [12]. Ask your plan which estradiol forms are on its lowest tier.
Men and testosterone
Testosterone labels approve treatment for men with low testosterone tied to specific medical conditions, and say safety and effectiveness for age-related low testosterone have not been established [13]. The AUA requires a total testosterone below 300 ng/dL on two tests plus symptoms [14]. In 2025 FDA removed the cardiovascular boxed warning and added a blood pressure warning to all testosterone products [15]. Compare TRT options and how to choose a TRT clinic.
Checking Arizona licenses
MDs are licensed by the Arizona Medical Board [4], and pharmacies, including those that compound pellets or creams, by the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy [5]. Read bioidentical hormones before buying a compounded package. Compounded packages are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality [16]. Nearby: Phoenix, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
Before you start
If you still have a uterus, estrogen-alone systemic therapy carries a boxed warning for endometrial cancer [2]. Testosterone gel can transfer to children and partners through skin contact; the label carries a boxed warning [13]. Have blood pressure checked on testosterone [15]. Chest pain, a swollen leg with sudden shortness of breath, or stroke signs need a 911 call.
Questions people ask
Is it too late to start HRT after 60?
FDA labeling recommends starting systemic hormone therapy within 10 years of menopause onset or before age 60, leaving timing and duration to patient and prescriber [2].
How much is HRT in Scottsdale without insurance?
Does Medicare cover hormone therapy?
Medicare Part D can cover hormone prescriptions, with cost based on formulary tier; Original Medicare generally does not pay for the drugs [12].
How do I check a Scottsdale hormone doctor?
Is testosterone approved for age-related low T?
No. The labels state that safety and effectiveness in men whose low testosterone is due to aging alone have not been established [13].
