How we check

Medical weight loss in Atlanta

Atlanta adults have an obesity rate of 29.3%, per CDC PLACES 2023 estimates [1], and Georgia Medicaid was not among the 13 state programs covering GLP-1 drugs for obesity in January 2026 [2]. That leaves most people in a weight loss clinic paying cash, with brand GLP-1s starting at $149 to $449 a month depending on the drug [3][4].

Why so many Atlanta patients pay out of pocket

Georgia is not on KFF's January 2026 list of 13 Medicaid programs that pay for GLP-1s when the goal is weight loss [2]. On the commercial side, Lilly cites an IFEBP survey finding that roughly half of people with employer coverage have no coverage for obesity drugs [8]. In practice, many Atlanta clinic patients see a cash price for both the visit and the drug.

The local numbers

CDC PLACES puts adult obesity at 29.3% inside city limits and 28.2% across Fulton County, with diagnosed diabetes at 10.6% and 10.9% [1][5]. For a city of 529,110 people [6], that is a large group who may qualify for an FDA-approved weight drug under its label.

Health systems and how to vet a clinic

We have not confirmed a weight program page or a published price at any Atlanta hospital system. If you already get care at one, call and ask what it offers for weight and how it bills.

For a private clinic, look up the prescriber with the Georgia Composite Medical Board [7], ask which pharmacy fills the drug, and ask whether it is a brand product or a compounded one. Compounded GLP-1s are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not check them for safety, effectiveness or quality before sale [10]. Our clinic checklist has the full question list.

Warning signs on any GLP-1

Labels say to stop and get care for severe stomach pain that will not go away, which can signal pancreatitis, and to watch for signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat [11][12]. Call 911 in an emergency.
