How we check

Medical weight loss in Detroit

Detroit has an adult obesity rate of 45.6%, far higher than the Wayne County rate of 37.4% [1] [2], but Michigan Medicaid has covered GLP-1 weight loss drugs only in narrow cases since January 1, 2026 [3]. Without coverage, semaglutide (Wegovy) costs $149 to $349 a month and tirzepatide (Zepbound) $299 to $449 at self-pay prices checked Oct 17, 2026 [4] [5].

Medical review: pending. A licensed clinician has not yet reviewed this page.

Medical weight loss is obesity care led by a licensed prescriber, often including FDA-approved GLP-1 drugs and ongoing monitoring.

The numbers in Detroit

CDC PLACES estimates that 45.6% of Detroit adults had obesity in 2023 and 19.2% had diagnosed diabetes, both higher than Wayne County as a whole (37.4% and 14.3%) [1] [2]. Detroit's median household income was $39,938 in 2020 to 2024, the lowest of the cities in one of our research sets [6]. The city had 649,095 residents in mid-2025 [6].

Put together, that means many Detroiters who meet the label criteria for a weight drug cannot easily pay cash for one. A year of Wegovy pens at $349 a month is $4,188 [4], more than 10% of the median household income.

Michigan Medicaid's narrow coverage

A Michigan Department of Health and Human Services letter dated December 8, 2025 limits weight-loss GLP-1 coverage, effective January 1, 2026, to members with morbid obesity who have failed all other interventions, including preferred anti-obesity drugs, in order to avoid bariatric surgery. Coverage for other uses, such as diabetes, did not change [3]. With 19.2% of Detroit adults living with diagnosed diabetes [1], the diabetes rules may matter more than the obesity rules for many people; Ozempic and Mounjaro are diabetes drugs [7] [8].

Where Detroiters get care

Large systems in the city include Henry Ford Health and the Detroit Medical Center. We did not find a published weight program price for either, so ask their primary care or endocrinology offices. Another lower-cost path for routine visits is direct primary care: Plum Health DPC in Detroit lists $95 a month for one person and posts cash prices for labs and medicines separately, and does not bill insurance [10]. A DPC doctor can prescribe, though the GLP-1 drug cost is still separate.

Check Michigan physicians with the Michigan Board of Medicine [11]. Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality [12]. Our FDA warning letter tracker and clinic checklist help you screen sellers.

Medicare in Detroit

Roughly 15.1% of Detroiters are 65 or older [6]. If they hold Part D coverage and meet the BMI rules, Medicare's temporary GLP-1 Bridge sets the monthly copay at $50 for Wegovy, Foundayo or a Zepbound KwikPen, ending December 31, 2027 [13] [14]. Important with diabetes

With nearly one Detroit adult in five diagnosed with diabetes [1], many readers already use insulin or a sulfonylurea; a GLP-1 on top raises the chance of a low, and the prescriber may cut the other dose. Stomach pain that is severe and does not ease can be pancreatitis. Anyone with medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2 in their own or family history should not take these drugs. Report vision changes if you have diabetic eye disease [15] [16]. Trouble breathing or a severe allergic reaction: call 911.
