The UCLA program

The UCLA Medical Weight Management Program describes medically supervised low-calorie and very-low-calorie diets, meal replacements and group cognitive behavioral therapy classes [1]. Its overview page does not list a price, so ask what the intake visit, labs, meal replacements and classes each cost, and whether medicine is prescribed and billed separately.

Medi-Cal stopped paying for weight-loss GLP-1s in 2026

Angelenos on Medi-Cal lost adult coverage for weight-loss GLP-1s on January 1, 2026, when the state's 2025-26 budget took effect. Two groups keep access: enrollees under 21, and adults whose doctor shows a medical need for another use, type 2 diabetes being the common one [2]. California was one of four states KFF found dropping obesity coverage after October 2025 [6]. Older residents on a Part D plan have a separate route: Medicare's GLP-1 Bridge sets a $50 copay per month for Wegovy, Foundayo or the Zepbound KwikPen until December 31, 2027, for people who meet its BMI rules [7].

A city of 3.9 million, two sets of numbers

CDC PLACES estimates adult obesity at 27.3% in the city and 26.5% in Los Angeles County; diagnosed diabetes is 11.9% in the city and 12.6% countywide [3] [4]. The city has 3,869,089 residents [5]. Large systems include Cedars-Sinai and Keck Medicine of USC; we did not confirm a published weight program or price at either.

Safety on prescription weight drugs

Per the Wegovy and Zepbound labels, get medical care for severe abdominal pain that persists, which can mean pancreatitis [15] [16]. Watch for allergic reactions such as facial swelling or trouble breathing, and for low blood sugar if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea. Both drugs have a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors and should not be used with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Stop when pregnancy is recognized. Call 911 in an emergency.
