A nonsurgical medical weight loss program treats obesity with clinician-led nutrition, behavior and medication plans rather than bariatric surgery.
UPMC and AHN programs
The UPMC Center for Obesity Medicine is at 3601 Fifth Ave, Falk Suite 3B, and says treatment can include medicine [1]. AHN Medical Weight Loss is the nonsurgical arm of the Allegheny Health Network Bariatric and Metabolic Institute [2]. Neither page lists a self-pay price, so ask about visit fees, labs and whether your plan is accepted.

Pennsylvania Medical Assistance changed in 2026
Pennsylvania's Medical Assistance bulletin of November 24, 2025 ended coverage of GLP-1s for overweight and obesity from January 1, 2026. It also removed Saxenda for every use, left phentermine and other non-GLP-1 obesity drugs covered, and put other GLP-1 uses behind prior authorization [3]. Allegheny County residents on Medicare Part D who meet the BMI criteria have a separate route: the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, at $50 a month for Wegovy, Foundayo or the Zepbound KwikPen through December 31, 2027 [6]. See insurance and Medicare coverage.
Allegheny County numbers
CDC's newest release has no Allegheny County obesity or diabetes rows, so the latest figures are from the 2024 release, based on 2022 data: 31.7% of adults with obesity and 11.0% with diagnosed diabetes [4]. The city has 307,632 residents [5].
Tirzepatide in Pittsburgh
On LillyDirect, a month of Zepbound (tirzepatide) is $299 at 2.5 mg and $399 at 5 mg; the 7.5 to 15 mg doses are $449 when each refill comes within 45 days [7]. In SURMOUNT-1, the 15 mg group averaged a 20.9% weight loss at 72 weeks [8]. Background: tirzepatide and tirzepatide cost.
| Product | Cash per month | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Foundayo tablets | $149 to $299 | [9] |
| Wegovy pen | $349 | [10] |
| Zepbound, 2.5 to 15 mg | $299 to $449 | [7] |
Choosing a program
Confirm the prescriber with the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine [11]. Ask whether you will get a brand drug or a compounded one; compounded GLP-1s carry no FDA approval, and FDA does not check them for safety, effectiveness or quality [12]. Label cautions
Pancreatitis is on both labels, so stomach pain that is severe and will not quit needs care [13] [14]. Facial or throat swelling or trouble breathing may be an allergic reaction. Anyone also on insulin or a sulfonylurea has a higher chance of low blood sugar. A boxed warning on thyroid C-cell tumors rules the drugs out for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Stop once pregnancy is recognized, and call 911 for emergencies.
