Stopping Ozempic means ending weekly semaglutide shots; the label gives no taper schedule, and the drug takes about 5 weeks to clear.
Is it safe to stop Ozempic all at once?
Ozempic's label explains how to begin and how to step the dose up. It does not include a schedule for tapering down [1]. Because Ozempic is labeled for type 2 diabetes [1], quitting it usually means your blood sugar plan has to change. Talk to your prescriber first; they may adjust your other diabetes medicines or add a new one.
The weeks after your last shot
Semaglutide's half-life is about 1 week, and it stays in circulation for about 5 weeks [1]. The label does not describe how quickly appetite returns. The best stopping data come from STEP 1, a Wegovy-dose trial in people without diabetes, not an Ozempic trial: participants had lost 17.3% of body weight by week 68 on semaglutide 2.4 mg, then regained 11.6 percentage points in the year after stopping, for a net loss of 5.6%. Cardiometabolic measures, including blood pressure and blood sugar, largely drifted back toward their starting values [2].
Tirzepatide showed the same pattern in SURMOUNT-4: after 36 weeks on the drug, people moved to placebo regained 14.0% of body weight over the following year, while people who kept taking it lost a further 5.5% [3]. The Mounjaro side of this question is on stopping Mounjaro.
Keeping weight off after Ozempic
No approach has been shown to stop regain completely after a GLP-1 ends. Ideas to raise with your prescriber: staying on treatment, moving to a medicine labeled for long-term weight management such as Wegovy or Zepbound, and building eating and activity habits while still on treatment. See the guide to switching GLP-1s, the GLP-1 diet plan and what to eat on Ozempic.
Taking a break and starting again
The label handles one missed dose: give it within 5 days or skip it [1]. The Ozempic label sections we read do not describe restarting after a longer gap. Wegovy's label says that after 2 or more missed doses in a row, people should contact their provider and may restart at a lower dose [4]. If you have been off Ozempic for 2 weeks or longer, ask your prescriber before the next shot, since going straight back to your old dose can bring back nausea and vomiting.
Surgery, colonoscopy and sedation
In people on these medicines, food or liquid has been inhaled into the lungs during general anesthesia or deep sedation [1]. Make sure your procedure team knows you take Ozempic. The label gives no set number of days to hold it, so your surgeon, gastroenterologist or anesthesia team decides. Medicines that matter around procedures are covered on Ozempic interactions.
Is there a time limit on Ozempic?
No maximum treatment length appears in the Ozempic label. It is studied as an ongoing diabetes medicine, including in the SUSTAIN 6 and FLOW outcome trials [1]. Most long-term worries trace to the boxed warning: semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents, and whether it does in humans is unknown [1]. The label does not say Ozempic stops working over time. If blood sugar climbs, the dose can go up to a maximum of 2 mg [1], or treatment can change.
Side effects that lead people to quit
Stomach and bowel side effects led 3.1% of people on 0.5 mg and 3.8% on 1 mg to stop in label trials, compared with 0.4% on placebo [1]. Besides nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, the label lists reflux (GERD, 1.5% to 1.9%) and burping (1.1% to 2.7%) [1]. Hair loss is among reports received after approval [1]. The label offers no specific treatments for these. Call your prescriber about vomiting you cannot stop or diarrhea with signs of dehydration, because kidney injury has been reported [1]. Get help
Severe stomach pain that does not go away can be pancreatitis: stop Ozempic and call your prescriber [1]. If you stop Ozempic but stay on insulin or a sulfonylurea, ask how often to check your blood sugar. Call 911 for trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat.
Stopping because of price? NovoCare lists self-pay from $349 a month (checked October 17, 2026) [5]; more ways to pay are on Ozempic cost.
Questions people ask
What happens after you stop Ozempic?
Can Ozempic be stopped cold turkey?
There is no taper schedule on the label [1]. Talk with your prescriber first, because your diabetes treatment will need to change.
Does the weight come back after Ozempic?
Ozempic's label has no stopping data. In the STEP 1 extension of semaglutide 2.4 mg, people regained 11.6 of the 17.3 percentage points they had lost within a year [2].
Is Ozempic meant to be taken for life?
The label sets no maximum length of treatment [1]. It is studied as an ongoing diabetes medicine; how long you stay on it is up to you and your prescriber.
What if I skip Ozempic for 2 weeks?
The label only covers a single missed dose: give it within 5 days or skip it [1]. Ask your prescriber how to restart after a longer break.
How long before a colonoscopy or surgery should Ozempic be stopped?
The label sets no number of days. It warns about aspiration during anesthesia or deep sedation, so tell your procedure team and follow their plan [1].
Can Ozempic stop working?
The label does not describe a loss of effect. If blood sugar rises, prescribers can raise the dose up to 2 mg weekly [1].
What are Ozempic's long-term risks?
The boxed warning covers thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents, with unknown human risk. Other warnings include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease and kidney injury [1].
