How we check

What happens when you stop Mounjaro

When you stop taking Mounjaro, tirzepatide clears over the following weeks (its half-life is about 5 days), and its effects on blood sugar and appetite fade [1]. In the SURMOUNT-4 trial, adults who switched from tirzepatide to placebo regained 14.0% of body weight over the next year, while those who continued lost another 5.5% [2]. The label has no taper schedule, so talk with your prescriber before you stop.

Stopping Mounjaro means ending weekly tirzepatide injections; the label gives no taper, and the drug's half-life is about 5 days.

Regain after stopping (SURMOUNT-4)

Kept most of loss
16.6% if stopped vs 89.5% if continued [2]

Can you stop Mounjaro cold turkey?

The Mounjaro label explains how to start and raise the dose, not how to come off it [1]. Because Mounjaro is a type 2 diabetes medicine [1], stopping usually means blood sugar will need another plan. Talk with your prescriber first. If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, ask how to adjust them and how often to check glucose.

What happens to your body and your weight

Tirzepatide's elimination half-life is about 5 days [1], so its effects wear off over the weeks after the last dose. SURMOUNT-4 tested stopping directly in adults without diabetes. Everyone first took tirzepatide openly for 36 weeks and lost an average of 20.9%. Those then switched to placebo had regained 14.0% of body weight by week 88, and just 16.6% of them still held at least 80% of their earlier loss, compared with 89.5% of those who stayed on the drug [2]. People with diabetes were not in that trial, so it is a guide, not a Mounjaro result.

How to keep weight off

Nothing has been shown to prevent regain fully. Options to raise with your prescriber: staying on treatment, moving to Zepbound, which is labeled for long-term weight management [3], and building eating, protein and activity habits while you are still on treatment. See switching GLP-1s, keeping muscle on a GLP-1 and what to eat on Mounjaro.

Pausing for a week, a month, or for surgery

One missed dose can be given up to 4 days (96 hours) late; after that, it is skipped [1]. Restarting after a week, two weeks or a month off is not explained in the label. Before your next shot, ask your prescriber which dose to use, because restarting high after a break can bring nausea and vomiting back, and the label links those to dehydration and kidney injury [1]. The dose steps are on Mounjaro dosage, and shot timing on how to use Mounjaro.

Having surgery or a colonoscopy? Tell the team about Mounjaro. Rare cases of pulmonary aspiration have been reported under general anesthesia or deep sedation, which is why they ask [1]. The label gives no number of days to hold it beforehand; your surgeon or anesthesia team sets that.

How long can you take Mounjaro?

The label does not set a maximum length of treatment. Its heart indication was added in August 2026, based on a cardiovascular outcomes trial in which 6,647 adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease received Mounjaro [1]. Long-term questions often come from the boxed warning: tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rats, and human risk is unknown [1]. The label does not describe Mounjaro losing its effect. If blood sugar climbs, the dose can rise in 2.5 mg steps to 15 mg [1].

Side effects that make people want to stop

Diabetes trial participants stopped Mounjaro for stomach or bowel side effects in 3.0% to 6.6% of cases, vs 0.4% on placebo [1]. The "sulfur burps" people describe show up on the label as burping (2.5% to 3.3%), alongside reflux (1.7% to 2.5%), with no duration or treatment given [1]. Hair loss is listed among reports after approval [1]; in Zepbound's weight trials it occurred in 4% to 5% vs 1% on placebo [4]. Whether hair grows back after stopping is not addressed, and there are no label data on feeling cold, dizziness or mood after stopping. Ask your prescriber before quitting over a side effect; the full list is on Mounjaro side effects.

Get help

Severe stomach pain that will not go away can be pancreatitis; stop Mounjaro and call your prescriber [1]. If you stop Mounjaro but keep insulin or a sulfonylurea, check your blood sugar as your care team advises. Call 911 for trouble breathing or throat swelling.

If price is pushing you to stop, the list price on Lilly's site is $1,112.16 for four pens covering 28 days [5]. Lilly's savings card can lower that to $25 when a commercial plan covers Mounjaro, or to as low as $499 a month when a commercial plan does not; uninsured people and those on government plans are not eligible, and the card ends December 31, 2026 [6]. We checked these prices on October 17, 2026. More options are on Mounjaro cost.

Questions people ask
