Medical weight loss means a licensed clinician supervises weight care, which may include FDA-approved medicine, nutrition plans and regular follow-up.
A city of one million, and its weight data
Austin's July 2025 Census estimate passed one million residents, at 1,002,632 [4]. CDC PLACES puts adult obesity at 30.1% in the city and 30.4% across Travis County, with diagnosed diabetes at 8.1% and 9.0% [1] [3]. The city spills into Williamson and Hays counties too, so your county figure may differ.

Three ways Austin patients get treated
- Your own doctor or a hospital system. Austin's hospital systems include St. David's HealthCare and Ascension Seton. We did not confirm a medical weight program or price at either; call and ask.
- A local cash clinic. Ask for the full monthly price, what drug is used, and whether it is brand or compounded.
- An online program. Compare them in online GLP-1 programs.
Texas coverage rules
KFF's January 2026 review notes Texas Medicaid covers some weight loss drugs but no GLP-1s for obesity [2]. Austin is a younger city, with 10.4% of residents 65 or older [4], so most adults here rely on job-based coverage. About half of people with employer insurance lack coverage for obesity drugs, per a survey Lilly cites [5]. If your plan covers Wegovy, Novo's savings offer can cut the copay to as little as $25 [6].
What the drugs cost in Austin

| Foundayo pill | $149 to $299 | [7] |

| Zepbound | $299 to $449 | [8] |
Red flags when shopping
- A clinic that calls a compounded drug "generic Wegovy". Compounded GLP-1s are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality [9].
- Claims that the product is the "same active ingredient" as a brand. FDA has warned telehealth firms against that wording [10].
- Prices with no dose listed, or a long prepaid plan with no refund terms.
- No named pharmacy. Check our FDA warning letter tracker.

Label safety points
Semaglutide and tirzepatide labels warn about thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents and rule out use with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2 [11] [12]. Severe stomach pain that will not ease may mean pancreatitis. Allergic reactions, and low blood sugar when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas, need quick attention. Stop when pregnancy is recognized. Call 911 if symptoms are severe.
