Medical weight loss is a doctor-supervised program that may combine prescription medicine, nutrition counseling and lab monitoring to treat obesity.
Why weight care is in demand in Houston
CDC PLACES estimates that 37.3% of adults in Harris County had obesity and 13.2% had diagnosed diabetes in 2023 [3]. Houston itself had 2,397,315 residents in July 2025, and the city spills past Harris into Fort Bend and Montgomery counties, so county data is the closest public measure [4]. Those are model-based estimates for the county, not counts of patients at any clinic.

Hospital programs that offer nonsurgical care
Two large Houston systems publish nonsurgical weight programs. We list only what their own pages say:
- Houston Methodist Center for Weight Loss & Bariatric Surgery includes nonsurgical medical weight loss programs that use medications, plus medical nutrition therapy [6].
- Memorial Hermann NewStart includes a non-surgical Medical Weight Management Program [7].
Neither page we read lists a cash price. Hospital programs usually bill your insurance for visits, so ask for the self-pay rate in writing if your plan will not pay. Independent clinics and med spas also sell weight loss shots in Houston. We do not list them unless they publish facts we can check.
What the medicine costs before clinic fees
| Medicine and channel | Monthly cash price | What is included | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wegovy pill, NovoCare | $149 (1.5 mg) to $299 (9 and 25 mg) | Medicine only | [1] |
| Wegovy pen, NovoCare | $349; $199 for the first two fills of 0.25 or 0.5 mg | Medicine only | [1] |
| Zepbound vial or KwikPen, LillyDirect | $299 (2.5 mg), $399 (5 mg), $449 (7.5 to 15 mg with refill in 45 days) | Medicine; free delivery or Walmart pickup | [2] |
| Foundayo pill, LillyDirect | $149 to $299 by dose | Medicine only | [8] |
For every channel and dose, see the GLP-1 cost comparison. Drug-specific pages cover Zepbound cost and Wegovy cost.
Fees a Houston clinic may add
- A first visit or intake fee, separate from the monthly price.
- Baseline labs, and repeat labs when the dose changes.
- A monthly membership that may or may not include the medicine.
- Price steps as the dose rises. Zepbound at LillyDirect goes from $299 to $449 a month across the dose range, and to $699 for 10 mg and up if a refill is late [2].
- Prepaid plans with no refund if you stop early.
Ask for one number: the total you will pay in month one and in month four. If a clinic sells a compounded drug, ask that in writing too. Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality [9].
Texas Medicaid, Medicare and work plans
Texas Medicaid covers some weight-loss drugs but no GLP-1s for obesity, according to KFF's January 2026 review [5]. People on Medicare Part D who qualify can use the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, which runs from July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027 with a $50 monthly copay [10][11]. Lilly, citing an IFEBP survey, says about half of people with employer coverage lack coverage for obesity medicines [12]. More detail is on insurance and Medicare for GLP-1s.
Checks before you sign up
- Look up the prescriber on the Texas Medical Board site [13].
- Ask whether the drug is brand (Zepbound, Wegovy, Foundayo) or compounded, and which pharmacy fills it.
- Get the all-in monthly price, including labs and visits.
- Read the cancellation and refund terms before paying.
- Check our FDA warning letter tracker if the program also sells online.
When to get help
Stop the medicine and call your prescriber for severe stomach pain that will not go away, which can signal pancreatitis, or for signs of an allergic reaction. Low blood sugar is more likely if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. These drugs carry a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors in animal studies [14][15]. Call 911 in an emergency.
If you would rather not drive across town
Online programs prescribe the same brand drugs and ship them. Compare them in online GLP-1 programs compared and read the provider reviews first. For other Texas cities, see Dallas, Austin and San Antonio. Our clinic finder guide and the medical weight loss hub explain how programs differ.
