Semaglutide is the GLP-1 medicine inside Wegovy, a pen or tablet for weight and heart risk, and inside Ozempic, a diabetes injection.
What a year costs a Houston household
Houston's median household income was $64,813 for 2020 to 2024 [2]. Twelve months of Wegovy pens at $349 come to $4,188, roughly 6.5% of that figure, before visits or labs [1]. The tablet's $149 starting price would be $1,788 over a year, but people step up from 1.5 mg after the first month, and the 9 mg and 25 mg strengths cost $299 [1]. With 37.3% of Harris County adults living with obesity in 2023 [3], the cash price shuts out a lot of people.

Houston hospital programs
Two large systems advertise weight care without surgery. Memorial Hermann's NewStart includes a nonsurgical Medical Weight Management Program [4]. Houston Methodist's Center for Weight Loss & Bariatric Surgery lists medication-based programs alongside medical nutrition therapy [5]. Neither page names its drugs or posts a cash price. Call and ask three things: whether they prescribe Wegovy, how visits are billed, and whether the drug can go through NovoCare pricing.

Texas Medicaid and license lookups
KFF lists Texas Medicaid as paying for some weight-loss drugs but no GLP-1s for obesity, as of January 2026 [8]. The Texas Medical Board licenses the physicians who prescribe in Houston [9].
Trial results and side effects, briefly
STEP 1 averaged a 14.9% weight drop at 68 weeks on 2.4 mg, against 2.4% for placebo [10]. The Wegovy label lists nausea in 44% of people on 2.4 mg (16% on placebo) and diarrhea in 30% [11]. Our results page and side effects page have the full picture.
Cheaper compounded offers
Discount ads for compounded semaglutide are common around Houston. Those products have no FDA approval and get no FDA review for safety, effectiveness or quality, and FDA had 990 adverse event reports on them by May 31, 2026 [12]. Read compounded semaglutide and check sellers in the FDA letter tracker.
From the Wegovy label
Rodent studies tied semaglutide to thyroid C-cell tumors, which is why it carries a boxed warning and is off-limits with a personal or family history of MTC or MEN 2. Stomach pain that is severe and constant can point to pancreatitis; stop and get care. Watch for allergic reactions, and for lows if you also use insulin or a sulfonylurea. Stop it 2 months or more before a planned pregnancy [11]. In an emergency, call 911.
