How we check

Medical weight loss in New Orleans

Semaglutide is sold to New Orleans cash buyers as the Wegovy pill from $149 a month and the Wegovy pen at $349 (two $199 starter boxes for newcomers), with tirzepatide as Zepbound from $299 per fill, all per the makers on October 17, 2026 [1][2]. With 15.1% of city adults diagnosed with diabetes [3], a diabetes brand through insurance may be the cheaper route for many.

Medical weight loss in New Orleans, as elsewhere, means obesity care led by a licensed prescriber, now often built on semaglutide or tirzepatide.

High diabetes, tight budgets

New Orleans had 362,154 residents in mid-2025 and a median household income of $56,631 [5]. CDC's PLACES model gives the city an adult diabetes rate of 15.1% and an obesity rate of 34.0% for 2023; Orleans Parish as a whole reads 16.2% and 34.4% [3][4]. That diabetes figure is above Bexar County's 13.9% and Dallas County's 12.5% [8][9]. It matters because diabetes opens a different coverage door than weight alone.

TrumpRx.gov lists the same starting cash prices for Wegovy ($149 pill, $199 pen) and Zepbound ($299), then sends buyers to the makers' sites or a pharmacy coupon [13][14]. Full detail: GLP-1 cost guide, semaglutide costs, tirzepatide costs, TrumpRx explained.

If you have type 2 diabetes

Ozempic (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) are labeled for type 2 diabetes [15][16]. With commercial coverage, Novo's offer can cut Ozempic to $25 a month and Lilly's card can cut Mounjaro to $25 for a 1-, 2- or 3-month fill; if the plan excludes Mounjaro, the card brings it to as low as $499 [10][11]. Uninsured patients cannot use the Mounjaro card [11]. Compare in Ozempic versus Mounjaro.

LCMC Health and Ochsner

LCMC Health, a New Orleans-based nonprofit system headquartered at 1100 Poydras Street, lists weight loss services that include the LCMC Health Tulane Weight Loss Center in Metairie and a Center for Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery downtown [17][7]. Ochsner Health is the other local system to ask [18]. We did not find self-pay prices for nonsurgical care at either; ask whether a medication-only program is available and what visits cost.

Louisiana Medicaid and Medicare

KFF's January 2026 review lists Louisiana as covering some weight-loss drugs but no GLP-1 for obesity [6]. Stateline reported in April 2026 that Louisiana lawmakers were debating coverage for people with obesity plus another condition; we have not confirmed the outcome [19]. On Medicare, 17.2% of New Orleans residents are 65 or older [5], and eligible Part D members can get Wegovy, Foundayo or the Zepbound KwikPen for $50 a month through the GLP-1 Bridge until December 31, 2027 [20][21]. See Medicare and GLP-1s.

Compounded shots

Cheaper compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are still advertised. They are not FDA-approved; FDA had received 990 adverse event reports for compounded semaglutide and more than 730 for compounded tirzepatide by May 31, 2026 [22]. See compounded semaglutide and the FDA letter tracker.

Read the label warnings

Persistent, severe pain in the abdomen can be pancreatitis: stop the drug and call. An allergic reaction needs care right away. People taking insulin or a sulfonylurea, common in a city where 15.1% of adults have diabetes, face a higher chance of low blood sugar. The labels for semaglutide and tirzepatide warn about diabetic retinopathy complications in people with type 2 diabetes and carry a boxed warning on thyroid C-cell tumors [23][24]. Call 911 in an emergency.
