Medical weight loss is a clinician-supervised program that can combine prescription medication, nutrition and activity changes, and, for some patients, surgery.

- 25.1% (CDC PLACES, 2023) [3]
- Highest borough rate
- Bronx 33.5%; Manhattan lowest at 19.2% [4]
- Diagnosed diabetes, NYC
- 11.9% of adults [3]
- NY Medicaid GLP-1s for obesity
- Not among the 13 covering states in KFF's Jan 2026 count [5]
- Lowest brand cash price
- Wegovy pill 1.5 mg, $149/month (checked Oct 17 2026) [2]
A citywide average that hides a 14-point borough gap
The citywide obesity estimate of 25.1% blends very different places. CDC PLACES puts the Bronx at 33.5% and Staten Island (Richmond County) at 30.3%, while Brooklyn is 25.1%, Queens 24.0% and Manhattan 19.2% [4]. Diagnosed diabetes follows a similar pattern: 16.1% in the Bronx and 14.3% in Queens against 8.9% in Manhattan [4].
That spread matters for cost. A Bronx or Queens resident with type 2 diabetes may get a diabetes drug through insurance, while a Manhattan resident using a GLP-1 only for weight often pays cash. Our medical weight loss guide explains the two paths.

Hospital-based programs in the city
Two academic programs publish what they offer. We list them as facts, not rankings:
- NYU Langone Weight Management Program: prescribes weight loss medication and runs supervised diet programs, with surgical options [6].
- Weill Cornell Medicine Comprehensive Weight Control Center: medications, devices and lifestyle care at 1305 York Avenue on the Upper East Side [7].
Neither program page lists a self-pay price. Ask whether visits are billed to insurance and whether medication is a separate pharmacy charge. Mount Sinai and NewYork-Presbyterian are other health systems in the city; we did not confirm a weight program page for either.

Medicaid, Medicare and employer plans in New York
New York was missing from KFF's January 2026 list of 13 state Medicaid programs that cover GLP-1s for obesity [5]. Diabetes coverage is a separate question for your plan. Since July 1, 2026, Part D enrollees who meet the BMI rules can get Wegovy, Foundayo or the Zepbound KwikPen for weight management through the temporary GLP-1 Bridge at $50 a month [9][10]. Our Medicare GLP-1 page has the details.
Clinic, hospital program or online?
- A hospital program fits someone who wants in-person monitoring, has several conditions, or may end up considering surgery.
- An online program may cost less per visit. Look up the prescriber, the pharmacy and any FDA letter before paying; the online GLP-1 program comparison and FDA warning letter tracker help.
- Compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide sold in the city has no FDA approval, and FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness or quality before they reach patients [11].
Read the label first
Wegovy and Zepbound are off limits for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Severe stomach pain that does not let up can mean pancreatitis: stop and get care. Allergic reactions need prompt attention, low blood sugar is more likely alongside insulin or a sulfonylurea, and the labels say to stop once a pregnancy is recognized [12][13]. For an emergency, call 911.
