Borough by borough
Obesity rates differ sharply across the five boroughs. CDC PLACES puts adult obesity at 33.5% in the Bronx, 30.3% on Staten Island, 25.1% in Brooklyn, 24.0% in Queens and 19.2% in Manhattan, and diagnosed diabetes is highest in the Bronx at 16.1% [3]. Against the city's $80,483 median household income [5], a year of pens at $349 a month comes to $4,188. North of the city line, Westchester County reports 26.0% obesity and 10.5% diabetes [4].
New York's Medicaid program does not appear on KFF's January 2026 list of programs paying for obesity GLP-1s [2]. Job-based coverage is uneven too: Lilly, citing an IFEBP survey, says roughly half of people with employer insurance lack obesity drug coverage [9].
Cash prices on Oct 17 2026
Novo charges one $349 price for every standard Wegovy pen dose, $399 for the 7.2 mg Wegovy HD pen, and $149, $199 or $299 for the 1.5, 4, 9 and 25 mg tablets; new pen buyers pay $199 for each of their first two 0.25 or 0.5 mg fills through Dec 31 2026 [1]. Ozempic runs $349 at 0.25 to 1 mg and $499 at 2 mg [11]. Novo also plans a $675 list price for Wegovy and Ozempic from Jan 1 2027 [10]. Prescriber fees are extra; full breakdown on semaglutide cost.
Where New Yorkers get a prescription and fill it
Hospital programs that prescribe weight-loss medicine include the NYU Langone Weight Management Program [13] and Weill Cornell Medicine's Comprehensive Weight Control Center on York Avenue, which lists medications among its tools [15]. Primary care doctors and online semaglutide programs prescribe it too. Novo says its cash prices work at more than 70,000 pharmacies with the savings offer, through NovoCare home delivery or CVS pickup, and via partners like Costco and GoodRx [12].
STEP 1 is the benchmark trial: a 14.9% average weight loss at 68 weeks on 2.4 mg, against 2.4% for placebo [14]. More in semaglutide results.
From the label
Wegovy and Ozempic both carry a boxed warning, based on rodent data, about thyroid C-cell tumors; people with MEN 2, or with medullary thyroid carcinoma in their own or their family's past, should not take them. The labels also list pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney injury from dehydration, and low blood sugar when semaglutide is combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea. If pregnancy happens, stop Wegovy; if it is planned, stop at least 2 months ahead [6]. A severe allergic reaction means calling 911.
