How we check

Ozempic vs Wegovy

Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and both are made by Novo Nordisk, but they are approved for different conditions at different doses [1] [2]. Ozempic is labeled for type 2 diabetes with a top dose of 2 mg a week; Wegovy is labeled for weight management and heart-risk reduction with maintenance doses of 1.7 to 7.2 mg [2] [1].

Ozempic and Wegovy are two brand names for semaglutide injection: Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes and Wegovy for chronic weight management, heart-risk reduction and MASH.

Same molecule, two labels

Semaglutide is the drug. Ozempic is the brand Novo Nordisk sells for type 2 diabetes: to control blood sugar, to lower major heart events in adults with diabetes and heart disease, and to lower kidney decline and cardiovascular death in adults with diabetes and chronic kidney disease [2]. Wegovy is the brand for weight reduction (adults, and teens 12 and older for the injection), for lowering heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death in adults with heart disease and excess weight, and for MASH with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis [1].

Using Ozempic only for weight loss is outside its label [2]. So "is semaglutide the same as Ozempic?" has a two-part answer: Ozempic is semaglutide, but semaglutide is also sold as Wegovy (pen and pill) and in other forms.

Which is better for weight loss?

Wegovy is the one tested and approved for weight. In STEP 1, adults on Wegovy 2.4 mg lost an average of 14.9% of body weight at 68 weeks versus 2.4% on placebo, and half lost at least 15% [9]. Wegovy reaches higher doses than Ozempic's 2 mg maximum [1] [2]. We did not find Ozempic weight results in the label facts we reviewed for this page. See Wegovy results and Ozempic results.

Cost and insurance

At self-pay, the two cost the same at most doses: $349 a month through NovoCare, with a $199 price for new patients' first two fills at 0.25 or 0.5 mg through Dec 31, 2026 [3] [4]. With commercial coverage, either can drop to $25 a month, with savings capped at $100 a month [3] [4].

Coverage follows the label. Medicare's GLP-1 Bridge covers Wegovy for weight at a $50 copay but excludes Ozempic and people with type 2 diabetes [7] [8]. Details on Ozempic insurance, Wegovy insurance and Ozempic cost.

Compounded semaglutide is a third, different thing

Compounded semaglutide is not Ozempic or Wegovy. It is made by a compounding pharmacy, is not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review it for safety, effectiveness or quality [10]. FDA has warned companies that describing compounded semaglutide with the "same active ingredient as Ozempic and Wegovy" is misleading [11] [12]. FDA also says salt forms such as semaglutide sodium are different active ingredients with no lawful basis for compounding [10]. Read compounded semaglutide.

Taking both, switching, and stopping

Do not take Ozempic and Wegovy together. The Wegovy label says it is not recommended with other semaglutide-containing products or any other GLP-1 receptor agonist [1]. Neither label gives a direct Ozempic-to-Wegovy conversion; the labels share a 0.25 mg starting dose [2] [1], and your prescriber decides where you start. Label schedules: Ozempic dosage. See switching GLP-1s.

What happens when you stop: in the STEP 1 extension, people regained about two-thirds of the weight they had lost within a year of stopping semaglutide, and heart and blood sugar gains largely faded [13]. Plan the next step with your prescriber. More on stopping Wegovy and stopping Ozempic.
