How we check

How long Wegovy takes to work and how much weight people lose

Wegovy is semaglutide, which belongs to the GLP-1 receptor agonist class and delays stomach emptying [1]. Its best-known weight result comes from STEP 1: after 68 weeks on the 2.4 mg dose, adults had lost 14.9% of their starting weight on average, compared with 2.4% for the placebo group [2].

Wegovy is Novo Nordisk's brand of semaglutide, sold as a weekly pen and a daily pill, FDA-approved for weight reduction and maintenance and for lowering heart risk.

What Wegovy does in the body

Wegovy's label places it among GLP-1 receptor agonists and says it delays gastric emptying [1]. That slower emptying is also the reason the label warns it may alter how well some pills are absorbed [1]. It is not a stimulant. Our explainer on how GLP-1 drugs work covers the hormone side in plain terms.

Nothing in the label pins down the day hunger eases or the scale starts to move. STEP 1 judged its main result at week 68 [2]. Anyone still in the first four months is below the dose that trial studied. More on each step: Wegovy dosage.

Against tirzepatide in SURMOUNT-5, people taking semaglutide were down 13.7% on average at week 72, while the tirzepatide group was down 20.2% [5]. The matchup is laid out in Wegovy vs Zepbound.

The pill and the 7.2 mg pen. In OASIS 4, adults taking the 25 mg Wegovy tablet lost an average 13.6% of body weight at 64 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo, counting everyone whether or not they stayed on treatment [7]. The label also describes two 72-week studies of the 7.2 mg pen [1], but their weight figures were not in the label text we could open, so this page leaves them out. The forms are compared in Wegovy pill vs injection.

Stalled or gaining on Wegovy: common reasons

  • Still ramping up. The pen reaches maintenance at week 17 and the pill on day 91 [1].
  • People differ. About 1 in 7 STEP 1 participants on Wegovy's dose (13.6%) stayed under 5% loss [2].
  • Room to go higher. After at least 4 weeks on 2.4 mg, adults may step to 7.2 mg when more loss is clinically indicated [1]. Only your prescriber can make that call.
  • Gaps in dosing. Two or more missed weeks in a row can mean starting again at a lower step [1].

Weight gain during treatment is not covered by the label, and it offers no way to speed results. A log of doses, meals and activity gives your prescriber something concrete to review.

How long semaglutide lingers

The label gives no hours or days. It does call semaglutide's half-life long, which is why it asks women planning a pregnancy to come off it at least 2 months ahead [1]. That advice is the same whatever the dose, 0.25 mg included.

Staying on Wegovy for the long run

Wegovy has no labeled stopping point; it is approved to keep weight off over the long term [1]. People in the SELECT heart study were on it for a median 37.3 months [1]. In the STEP 1 extension, those who came off semaglutide put back roughly two-thirds of what they had lost within 12 months [6]. Our page on stopping Wegovy covers that in detail.

Approval timeline and approved uses

The semaglutide molecule got its first US approval in 2017 [1]. On March 8, 2024, FDA added a Wegovy indication to cut the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack and stroke in adults who have cardiovascular disease plus obesity or overweight [3]. Novo Nordisk announced the pill's approval on December 22, 2025 [7]. We did not find a primary source for the date of the first weight-loss approval.

Now, the injection is labeled for weight reduction and maintenance from age 12 up, and the tablet for adults only [1]. The injection also holds accelerated approval for MASH, a liver disease, when there is moderate to advanced fibrosis [1].

Safety and getting a prescription

Wegovy is FDA-approved but carries a boxed warning based on thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents, plus warnings that include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and kidney injury [1]. You need a prescription. At NovoCare, with prices checked October 17, 2026, the pen is $349 a month, new patients pay $199 for each of the first two fills of the two lowest doses through December 31, 2026, and the pill begins at $149 [4]. Prescribers are compared in online GLP-1 programs; every price channel is in Wegovy cost.

Before your first dose

Tell your prescriber if you or a relative has had medullary thyroid carcinoma, or if you have MEN 2; Wegovy is not for you [1]. If belly pain is severe and does not let up, stop Wegovy and call right away [8]. For emergencies, dial 911.

Questions people ask

How does Wegovy help you lose weight?

Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, and its label says it slows stomach emptying [1]. In STEP 1, the 2.4 mg group averaged a 14.9% drop in body weight by week 68, against 2.4% with placebo [2].

How long does Wegovy take to work?

There is no labeled day count. The pen ramps up until week 17, and STEP 1 reported its main weight result at week 68 [1] [2].

How much weight can you lose on Wegovy?

STEP 1 participants on 2.4 mg lost 14.9% on average by week 68, and 50.5% lost 15% or more [2]. Those are group averages, not a guarantee.

Why am I not losing weight on Wegovy?

Two common reasons: you may still be below the maintenance dose, which the pen reaches at week 17, and people vary; 13.6% in STEP 1 lost less than 5% [1] [2].

How long does Wegovy stay in your system?

The label gives no exact time. It calls the half-life long and says to stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy [1].

Is Wegovy FDA approved for weight loss?

Yes. The injection is approved for weight reduction and maintenance in adults and children 12 and older; the pill is approved for adults [1].

How long can you be on Wegovy?

The label sets no limit; it is approved for long-term weight maintenance. In the SELECT trial, median time on Wegovy was 37.3 months [1].

Does Wegovy work for everyone?

No. In STEP 1, 86.4% of the 2.4 mg group reached 5% loss, which leaves roughly 1 in 7 who did not [2].

How long has Wegovy been on the market?

Semaglutide's first US approval was in 2017 [1]. FDA approved Wegovy's heart-risk use on March 8, 2024 [3], and Novo Nordisk announced the pill on December 22, 2025 [7].
