Wegovy insurance coverage means your health plan includes Wegovy on its formulary for at least one of its FDA-approved uses: weight management, heart risk reduction in adults with heart disease, or MASH liver disease [3].
How a plan decides whether to pay for Wegovy
- Does the plan cover obesity drugs at all? For job-based insurance this is the employer's benefit choice. That is why the insurer's name tells you little; Lilly cites survey data that about half of people with employer coverage lack obesity drug coverage [2].
- Is Wegovy on the formulary, and on which tier? Some plans prefer one drug over another. North Carolina Medicaid, for example, makes Wegovy its preferred GLP-1 [6].
- Do you meet the prior authorization rules? Each plan sets its own criteria, and published examples follow the label. Wegovy is approved for adults (and children 12 and older for the injection) with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition [3]. TennCare, as one published example, asks for a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a related condition [7].
- Which diagnosis is on the request? Wegovy also has approvals for heart risk reduction in adults with established heart disease and for MASH liver disease [3]. Some plans that dropped weight-only coverage still pay for those uses. MassHealth, after ending weight-only coverage, still covers adults with a BMI over 27 and heart disease, and patients with MASH [8].
What Wegovy costs with and without coverage
| Your situation | Monthly cost | Notes | Checked | Source |

| Commercial plan does not cover it, pen | $349 ($199 first two starter fills if new) | NovoCare self-pay; does not count toward deductibles | Oct 17, 2026 | NovoCare [1] |
| Commercial plan does not cover it, pill | $149 to $299 | By dose | Oct 17, 2026 | NovoCare [1] |

How to check your own plan
- Find your plan's formulary (drug list) in the member portal, or call the pharmacy number on your card.
- Search for Wegovy and note the tier and any "PA" (prior authorization) or "ST" (step therapy) flag.
- Ask what the prior authorization needs: BMI, related conditions such as high blood pressure or heart disease, and proof of a diet and exercise program.
- Ask your prescriber's office to submit the request with chart notes that show your BMI and conditions.
- If approved, register for Novo's savings offer to bring the copay down to as little as $25 [1].
If your plan says no
- Read the denial letter. Look for the reason and any appeal deadline. We could not confirm a standard appeal deadline; it varies by plan, so ask your plan and act quickly. If a chart note or BMI reading was missing, your prescriber can resend it.
- Appeal with your prescriber. A letter that ties your history to Wegovy's approved uses, such as heart disease or MASH, can matter [3].
- Ask about a covered alternative. If the plan prefers another GLP-1, see Zepbound coverage.
- Pay cash at the lowest real price. Wegovy pill from $149, pen $349 [1], or Foundayo from $149 [9]. TrumpRx lists the same maker prices [10]; see TrumpRx explained.
Medicare, Medicaid and other public plans
Medicare's GLP-1 Bridge covers Wegovy pens and pills at $50 a month for Part D members who meet BMI and health criteria, from July 1, 2026 through Dec 31, 2027 [11] [4]. Novo's $25 offer excludes Medicare, Medicaid and other government plans [1]. Full rules: Medicare and Medicaid GLP-1 coverage.

Coverage does not change the risks
Wegovy has a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents; do not use it with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2 [3]. Get care for severe stomach pain that will not go away or signs of an allergic reaction. People who also take insulin or a sulfonylurea face a higher chance of low blood sugar. Stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy [3]. For an emergency, call 911.

Questions people ask
Does Aetna, Blue Cross, UnitedHealthcare or Cigna cover Wegovy?
Coverage depends on your employer's plan, not the carrier name. Two people with the same insurer can get different answers because each employer or plan picks its own drug list. To find out: call the member number on your card, ask whether Wegovy is on your formulary for weight management, ask what prior authorization requires (BMI, related conditions, a diet program), and ask what your copay would be. If it is covered, Novo's savings offer can bring the cost to $25 a month [1].
Is Wegovy covered by insurance?
How much is Wegovy with insurance?
With a commercial plan that covers it, as little as $25 a month, because Novo's savings offer pays up to $100 a month toward your copay [1]. If your copay is more than $125, you pay the copay minus $100.
What diagnosis will get Wegovy covered?
Wegovy is approved for weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition; for heart risk reduction in adults with established heart disease and overweight or obesity; and, as an injection, for MASH with moderate to advanced fibrosis [3]. Some plans cover the heart and liver uses even after dropping weight-only coverage, as MassHealth does [8].
Does TRICARE, CHAMPVA or Kaiser cover Wegovy?
Coverage depends on the specific plan's drug list and prior authorization rules, not the plan's name. Ask your plan whether Wegovy is on its formulary for your diagnosis and what prior authorization needs. Novo's $25 offer excludes government plans [1].
Does Medi-Cal cover Wegovy for weight loss?
No, not for adults since Jan 1, 2026. Medi-Cal ended GLP-1 coverage for adult weight loss; members under 21 are still covered, and other uses can be covered if medically necessary [14].
Does GoodRx cover Wegovy?
How long does insurance take to approve Wegovy?
It varies by plan, so ask when your prescriber submits. For Medicare's GLP-1 Bridge, prior authorization decisions come within 72 hours [11].
