Richmond's health picture

Richmond is an independent city, so CDC's county-level figures describe the city itself: 37.7% of adults have obesity and 12.9% have diagnosed diabetes [1]. The city had 237,257 residents in July 2025 and a median household income of $64,587 [4]. At that income, whether insurance pays makes a large difference.

Virginia Medicaid still covers obesity drugs

Virginia is one of the few states still paying for obesity GLP-1s through Medicaid: Stateline, citing KFF, listed it among covering states in 2026 [2], and KFF counted only 13 such programs in January 2026 [5]. A Richmond Medicaid member should ask the plan for its Wegovy or Zepbound prior authorization rules before buying anything cash. Stateline also reported more states weighing cuts, so recheck the rules each year [2].

If you are paying cash

At Richmond's median income, a year of the Wegovy pen at $349 a month, $4,188 [3], equals about 6.5% of household income [4]. The Wegovy pill costs less at lower doses.

Semaglutide label warnings

Wegovy and Ozempic carry a boxed warning based on thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents. They are contraindicated in MEN 2 and when the patient or a relative has had medullary thyroid carcinoma [10]. Get prompt care for severe belly pain that persists, an allergic reaction, or low blood sugar if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea. Wegovy should be stopped when a pregnancy is recognized [10]. Compounded semaglutide has no FDA approval, and the agency does not assess its safety, effectiveness or quality [11]. Emergencies: call 911.
