NC Medicaid's stop and restart

NC Medicaid, both Direct and managed care plans, dropped GLP-1 coverage for weight management on October 1, 2025 during a budget impasse, then restored it effective December 12, 2025 under its earlier prior authorization criteria [1]. Wegovy is the preferred drug; Zepbound and Saxenda require a trial of Wegovy first [1]. KFF's January 2026 review also records North Carolina's drop in October 2025 and its reinstatement in December [7].

Safety notes for Triangle patients

Rodent studies produced a boxed warning on thyroid C-cell tumors, so neither Wegovy nor Zepbound is for someone with MEN 2 or with medullary thyroid carcinoma in their own or their family's history [10] [11]. Abdominal pain that is intense and lingering, a rash with swelling, or shakiness from low blood sugar while on insulin or sulfonylurea pills all need prompt care. The labels call for stopping once a pregnancy is recognized. Compounded copies lack FDA approval [12]. Dial 911 for a swollen throat or breathing trouble.
