Hormone therapy in San Francisco Bay Area: HRT and TRT clinics

Hormone replacement therapy in the San Francisco Bay Area is available from primary care, gynecology, urology and telehealth menopause services, and the FDA-approved generics are inexpensive, about $20 to $25 for 90 estradiol tablets with a coupon [1]. The region skews older than many cities: 17.6% of San Francisco and 19.4% of San Mateo County residents are 65 or older [2][3].

Medical review: pending. A licensed clinician has not yet reviewed this page.

Menopausal hormone therapy replaces estrogen (with a progestogen for those with a uterus); testosterone therapy is for men with confirmed hypogonadism.

Age across the three counties

Census figures show 17.6% of San Francisco residents, 19.4% of San Mateo County residents and 16.3% of Santa Clara County residents are 65 or older [2][3][4]. Many are past the window FDA labeling now recommends for starting systemic hormone therapy: within 10 years of menopause onset or before age 60 [6]. Starting later is a decision to make with a clinician who knows your history.

What changed on the labels

In November 2025 HHS and FDA announced removal of boxed language on cardiovascular disease, breast cancer and probable dementia from menopause hormone labels; the endometrial cancer warning stays on systemic estrogen-alone products [6]. The first six revised labels were approved Feb 12 2026 [10]. For testosterone, FDA removed the heart-risk boxed language in 2025 and added a class-wide blood pressure warning [11].

Choosing a Bay Area clinic

  • Look up the prescriber with the Medical Board of California [5].
  • Prefer FDA-approved estradiol and progesterone unless you have a documented reason; the National Academies advise limiting compounded bioidentical hormones to specific medical needs [12]. Compounded versions are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality [15].
  • For TRT, expect two lab tests; the AUA uses under 300 ng/dL plus symptoms [13].
  • We could not confirm local hospital menopause programs for this page, so none are listed.

Safety

Children exposed to testosterone gel on a parent's skin have shown signs of virilization; the gel label carries a boxed warning [14]. Get emergency care for chest pain or stroke symptoms.
